Sahih Muslim 763d (Book 6, Hadith 219) #8944
Praying in the Middle of the Night

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) woke up in the middle of the night to pray and made his companion stand on his right side. He prayed 13 rak'ahs and then went back to sleep.

Ibn 'Abbas reported: I slept (one night) in the house of Maimuna, the wife of the Messenger of Allah , and the Messenger of Allah was with her that night. He (after sleeping for half of the night got up and) then performed ablution and then stood up and observed prayer. I too stood on his left side. He took hold of me and made me stand on his right side. He (the Holy Prophet) observed thirteen rak'ahs on that night. The Messenger of Allah then slept and snored and it was a habit with him to snore while sleeping. The Mu'adhdhin then came to him (to inform him about the prayer). He then went out and observed prayer without performing ablution. ('Amr said: Bukair b. Ashajj had narrated it to me )

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad PBUH woke up in the middle of the night to pray. He made his companion stand on his right side and performed thirteen rak'ahs of prayer without performing ablution again. This shows us that it is important for Muslims to wake up during a part of the night for prayer as it was a habit with Prophet Muhammad PBUH himself. It also teaches us that we should be mindful when praying and make sure our companions are standing in their proper places so that they can benefit from our prayers too. Furthermore, this hadith also shows us how devoted Prophet Muhammad PBUH was towards Allah SWT as he would wake up even after sleeping half of the night just to perform prayer.
