Sahih Muslim 761a (Book 6, Hadith 211) #8936
Refraining from Making Tarawih Obligatory

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) refrained from leading the Tarawih prayer in the mosque on the third or fourth night of Ramadan, as he feared that it might become obligatory for people.

'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah prayed one night in the mosque and people also prayed along with him. He then prayed on the following night and there were many persons. Then on the third or fourth night (many people) gathered there, but the Messenger of Allah did not come out to them (for leading the Tarawih prayer). When it was morning he said: I saw what you were doing, but I desisted to come to you (and lead the prayer) for I feared that this prayer might become obligatory for you. (He the narrator) said: It was the month of Ramadan.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful of your actions & religious obligations

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, Prophet Muhammad PBUH is teaching us about his wisdom and mercy. He was aware that if he led people in prayer every night during Ramadan, they would think it was obligatory and would be obligated to do so every year. Therefore, out of mercy and kindness towards his followers, he refrained from leading them in prayer on certain nights so as not to burden them with an obligation they were not ready for yet. This teaches us to be mindful of our actions and how they may affect others around us; we should always strive to make things easier for those around us rather than harder. Additionally, this hadith also teaches us about being mindful of our religious obligations; we should never take on more than we can handle or more than what is required by religion without proper guidance from a knowledgeable source.
