The Prophet's Night Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad used to pray 11 rak'ahs at night, followed by one rak'ah of Witr and two short rak'ahs before dawn.

'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah used to pray eleven rak'ahs at night, observing the Witr with a single rak'ah, and when he had finished them, he lay down on his right side, till the Mu'adhdhin came to him and he (the Holy Prophet) then observed two short rak'ahs (of Sunan of the dawn prayer).

QUICK LESSONS:
Pray regularly throughout day & night

EXPLANATIONS:
According to the hadith narrated by 'Aisha, the Prophet Muhammad used to pray 11 rak’ahs at night. A rak’ah is a unit of prayer that consists of standing up straight with hands raised in supplication and reciting verses from the Quran. After completing these 11 prayers, he would perform one additional prayer known as witr. This is a special prayer that is performed after Ishaa prayer and before Fajr prayer. After performing witr, he would lie down on his right side until it was time for Fajr prayer. At this point he would stand up again and perform two short prayers known as Sunan of the dawn prayer before beginning Fajr proper. This hadith teaches us about the importance of praying regularly throughout the night and day in order to stay close to Allah Almighty. It also shows us how important it is for Muslims to be punctual when it comes to their daily prayers so they can reap all its rewards both in this life and in the hereafter.
