Sahih Muslim 712 (Book 6, Hadith 81) #8806
Praying with Congregation vs Praying Alone

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a person who observed two rak'ahs in a corner of the mosque and then joined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer. The Prophet asked him which one out of these two prayers did he count as his Fard prayer.

'Abdullah b. Sarjis reported: A person entered the mosque, while the Messenger of Allah was leading the dawn prayer. He observed two rak'ahs in a corner of the mosque, and then joined the Messenger of Allah in prayer. When the Messenger of Allah had pronounced salutations (he had concluded the prayer), he said: O, so and so, which one out of these two prayers did you count (as your Fard prayer), the one that you observed alone or the prayer that you observed with us?

QUICK LESSONS:
Offer your prayers at their prescribed times so you can join others in congregational worship and reap its rewards too!

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of praying with congregation rather than alone. It is narrated by Abdullah b. Sarjis that a person entered the mosque while the Messenger of Allah was leading the dawn prayer and observed two rak’ahs in a corner before joining him in prayer. After concluding his salutations, Prophet Muhammad asked him which one out of these two prayers did he count as his Fard prayer, either that he observed alone or that he observed with them? This hadith emphasizes on praying together as part of congregation rather than alone, for it has more reward and blessings from Allah Almighty. It also teaches us to be punctual when it comes to offering our prayers at their prescribed times so we can join others in congregational worship and reap its rewards too!
