The Importance of Obligatory Prayers

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that when the prayer time begins, only obligatory prayers should be performed.

Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: When the prayer commences, there is no prayer but the obligatory one.
وَحَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ حَبِيبٍ الْحَارِثِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا رَوْحٌ، حَدَّثَنَا زَكَرِيَّاءُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ دِينَارٍ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ عَطَاءَ بْنَ يَسَارٍ، يَقُولُ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏ "‏ إِذَا أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاَةُ فَلاَ صَلاَةَ إِلاَّ الْمَكْتُوبَةُ
