Praying on a Ride

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to perform supererogatory prayers while riding, but not obligatory prayers.

Salim b. 'Abdullah reported on the authority of his father that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be. upon him) used to observe Nafl (supererogatory) prayer on his ride no matter in what direction it turned its face, and he observed Witr too on it, but did not observe obligatory prayer on it.

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform supererogatory prayer while riding

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us that the Prophet Muhammad used to perform supererogatory prayers while riding, but not obligatory prayers. Supererogatory prayer is an extra prayer that Muslims can choose to do in addition to the five daily obligatory prayers. It is important for Muslims to remember that they should only pray when they are in a state of ritual purity and cleanliness, which may be difficult or impossible when one is riding a horse or other animal. Therefore, it is best for Muslims to pray their obligatory prayer on solid ground and save their supererogatory prayer for times when they are able to properly prepare themselves for worship. This hadith also teaches us about the importance of being mindful of our actions and making sure we are following Islamic teachings even during mundane activities such as riding a horse or other animal.
