Shortening Prayers While Travelling

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) shortening his prayer when travelling a certain distance.

Yahya b. Yazid al-Huna'i reported: I asked Anas b. Malik about shortening of prayer. He said: When the Messenger of' Allah had covered a distance of three miles or three farsakh (Shu'ba, one of the narrators, had some doubt about it) he observed two rak'ahs.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks of the Prophet Muhammad's practice of shortening his prayers while travelling a certain distance. It is reported that when he travelled three miles or three farsakhs, he would observe two rak'ahs instead of four. This shows us that it is permissible to shorten our prayers while travelling in order to make it easier for us and not burden us with too much worship at once. It also teaches us that we should be mindful of our physical limitations and not push ourselves too hard in matters related to worship as Allah does not want hardship for His servants but ease and mercy instead.
