Sahih Muslim 685b (Book 6, Hadith 2) #8727
Prayer Requirements in Travel and Residence

SUMMARY: Allah prescribed the prayer as two rak'ahs, and it was completed to four rak'ahs at the place of residence, but remained two rak'ahs while travelling.

'A'isha, the wife of the Messenger of Allah , said Allah prescribed the prayer as two rak'ahs, then it was completed (to four rak'ahs) at the place of residence, but was retained in the same position in journey as it was first made obligatory.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious obligations even while travelling ; Be grateful for any ease or blessing from God ; Strive to do one's best .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that when Muslims are in their place of residence, they must perform four rak’ahs for their prayer. However, when they are travelling, they only need to perform two rak’ahs. This is because Allah has made it easier for those who travel by reducing the number of required prayers from four to two. The hadith also teaches us that we should be grateful for any ease or blessing that comes our way from Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that we should always strive to do our best in whatever situation we find ourselves in; whether at home or on a journey. He also taught us not to take any blessings or ease granted by Allah lightly and instead be thankful for them all.
