Sahih Muslim 569a (Book 5, Hadith 100) #8414
The Purpose of Mosques

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned against using the mosque for activities other than worship.

Sulaiman b. Buraida narrated it on the authority of his father that a man cried out in the mosque saying: Who had called out for the red camel? Upon this the Messenger of Allah said: May it not be restored to you! The mosques are built for what they are meant.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect mosques by using them only as places of prayer and contemplation.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of respecting mosques and using them only for their intended purpose - worshiping Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was in a mosque when someone asked who had called out for a red camel. He responded by saying “May it not be restored to you!” This shows that he disapproved of people using the mosque for activities other than worshiping Allah and reminded them that mosques are built specifically for this purpose. We should all remember to respect our mosques and use them only as places of prayer and contemplation.
