Sahih Muslim 565 (Book 5, Hadith 94) #8409
Forbidden Consumption of Garlic in Mosque

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) forbade the consumption of garlic before entering the mosque, as its odour was repugnant to him.

Abu Sa'id reported: We made no transgression but Khaybar was conquered. We, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah , fell upon this plant. i e. garlic. because the people were hungry. We ate it to our heart's content and then made our way towards the mosque. The Messenger of Allah sensed its odour and he said: He who takes anything of this offensive plant must not approach us in the mosque. The people said: Its (use) has been forbidden; its (use) bu been forbidden. This reached the Messenger of Allah and he said: O people, I cannot forbid (the use of a thing) which Allah has made lawful, but (this garlic) is a plant the odour of which is repugnant to me.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation that occurred when the Prophet Muhammad's companions were travelling and they became hungry. They found a plant called garlic and ate it to their heart's content. When they arrived at the mosque, the Prophet sensed its odour and he said that those who had eaten it should not enter into the mosque as its odour was repugnant to him. He then clarified that he could not forbid something which Allah had made lawful but asked them to avoid eating it before coming into his presence in order to maintain cleanliness and respect for his presence in the mosque. This hadith teaches us about respecting places of worship by maintaining cleanliness and avoiding anything which may be offensive or unpleasant for others present there. It also teaches us about being mindful of our actions even if something is permissible according to Islamic law, we should still consider how our actions may affect others around us negatively or positively.
