Sahih Muslim 541a (Book 5, Hadith 49) #8364
Forgiveness Over Punishment

SUMMARY: Allah gave the Prophet Muhammad power over a wicked Jinn, but he chose to forgive it instead of punishing it.

Abu Huraira reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah saying: A highly wicked one amongst the Jinn escaped ____yesternight____ to interrupt my prayer, but Allah gave me power over him, so I seized him and intended to tie him to one of the pillars of the mosque in order that you, all together or all, might look at him, but I remembered the supplication of my brother Sulaiman:" My Lord, forgive me, give me such a kingdom as will not be possible for anyone after me" (Qur'an, 38. 35).

QUICK LESSONS:
Choose forgiveness over punishment whenever possible . Ask for God's mercy . Show mercy towards others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the mercy and forgiveness of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is narrated by Abu Huraira that one night, a highly wicked Jinn escaped and tried to interrupt the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. However, Allah gave him power over this Jinn so he could have punished it for its misdeeds. But instead, he remembered a supplication made by his brother Sulaiman in which he asked for forgiveness from Allah and mercy upon himself. Thus, out of his immense mercy and compassion, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ chose to forgive this Jinn instead of punishing it. This hadith teaches us that we should always choose forgiveness over punishment as much as possible because our Lord is Most Merciful and He loves those who show mercy towards others. We should also remember that if we ask for His Mercy then He will surely grant us with His blessings in abundance just like He did with Sulaiman when he asked for forgiveness from Him.
