Sahih Muslim 531 (Book 5, Hadith 27) #8342
Worshiping at Graves is Forbidden

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned against the Jews and Christians for taking the graves of their apostles as places of worship.

'A'isha and Abdullah reported: As the Messenger of Allah was about to breathe his last, he drew his sheet upon his face and when he felt uneasy, he uncovered his face and said in that very state: Let there be curse upon the Jews and the Christians that they have taken the graves of their apostles as places of worship. He in fact warned (his men) against what they (the Jews and the Christians) did.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's warning against worshipping at graves. He was on his deathbed when he uncovered his face and said that there should be a curse upon Jews and Christians for taking the graves of their apostles as places of worship. This hadith teaches us that it is forbidden to take any grave or tomb as a place of worship, regardless if it belongs to an apostle or not. It also teaches us that we should not follow in the footsteps of those who have gone before us if they are doing something wrong, even if they are from our own religion or culture. We must always strive to do what is right according to Islamic teachings, no matter what others may be doing around us.
