Sahih Muslim 453c (Book 4, Hadith 180) #8185
Following the Prayer of the Prophet

SUMMARY: Umar asked Sa'd why people were complaining about him in prayer, and Sa'd replied that he was following the prayer of the Prophet. Umar approved of this.

Jabir b. Samura reported: 'Umar said to Sa'd: They complain against you in every matter, even in prayer. He (Sa'd) said: I prolong (standing) in the first two (rak'ahs) and shorten it in the last two, and I make no negligence in following the prayer of the Messenger of Allah . He ('Umar) remarked: This is what is expected of you, or, that is what I deemed of you.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings when praying, Strive for excellence in worship

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how to pray properly according to Islamic teachings. Umar asked Sa'd why people were complaining about him in prayer, and Sa'd replied that he was following the prayer of the Prophet Muhammad. Umar approved of this and praised him for it, showing that it is important to follow what has been taught by Allah's messenger when praying. It is important to take care not to be negligent or careless when praying, but also not to prolong it too much either; instead one should strive for a balance between these two extremes so as not to miss out on any blessings from Allah while still being mindful of time constraints. The lesson here is that we should always strive for excellence in our worship and follow what has been taught by Allah's messenger so as not to miss out on any rewards from Him.
