Sahih Muslim 413a (Book 4, Hadith 90) #8095
Following the Imams

SUMMARY: This hadith is about following the Imams and not doing what the Persians and Romans do, which is to stand before their kings while they sit.

Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah was ill and we said prayer behind him and he was sitting. And Abu Bakr was making audible to the people his takbir. As he paid his attention towards us he saw us standing and (directed us to sit down) with a gesture. So we sat down and said our prayer with his prayer in a sitting posture. After uttering salutation he said: You were at this time about to do an act like that of the Persians and the Romans. They stand before their kings while they sit, so don't do that; follow your Imams. If they say prayer standing, you should also do so, and if they say prayer sitting, you should also say prayer sitting.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your leaders, Be humble & follow Allah's commands through His Messenger (ﷺ) .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith was narrated by Jabir and it talks about how we should follow our Imams in prayer. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was ill at the time and people were standing for prayer behind him while he was sitting. He gestured for them to sit down so that they could pray with him in a sitting posture. After finishing his prayer, he said that this act of standing before their leader while he sits is something done by Persians and Romans but Muslims should not do this; instead they should follow their Imams in whatever way they lead them in prayer. This hadith teaches us to respect our leaders, be humble, and always follow what Allah has commanded us to do through His Messenger ﷺ. It also teaches us that we should not imitate other nations or cultures if it goes against Islamic teachings or values.
