Sahih Muslim 402a (Book 4, Hadith 59) #8064
Praying with Peace and Blessings

SUMMARY: When praying, one should recite a prayer of peace and blessings for Allah, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and all of Allah's upright servants.

'Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) said: While observing prayer behind the Messenger of Allah we used to recite: Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon so and so. One day the Messenger of Allah said to us: Verily Allah is Himself Peace. When any one of you sits during the prayer, he should say: All services rendered by words, by acts of worship, and all good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah's mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah's upright servants, for when he says this it reaches every upright servant in the heavens and the earth. (And say further): I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that when we pray, we should recite a prayer of peace and blessings for Allah, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and all of Allah's upright servants. We can start by saying “Peace be upon Allah” followed by “Peace be upon so-and-so” which is usually followed by “Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants”. After this we can testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Then we can choose any supplication which pleases us to offer it to God. This hadith reminds us to always remember our Creator in our prayers as well as those who have been sent as messengers from Him such as Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It also encourages us to ask for blessings from God on ourselves, our families, friends, communities etc., so that everyone may benefit from His mercy in this life as well as the hereafter.
