Reciting Umm al-Qur'an in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that reciting Umm al-Qur'an is an essential part of prayer.

Mahmud b. al-Rabi', on whose face the Messenger of Allah squirted water from the well, reported on the authority of 'Ubada b. as- Samit that the Messenger of Allah said: He who does not recite Umm al-Qur'an is not credited with having observed prayer.
حَدَّثَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْحُلْوَانِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، عَنْ صَالِحٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، أَنَّ مَحْمُودَ بْنَ الرَّبِيعِ الَّذِي، مَجَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ فِي وَجْهِهِ مِنْ بِئْرِهِمْ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ عُبَادَةَ بْنَ الصَّامِتِ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ صَلاَةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ
