Sahih Muslim 382 (Book 4, Hadith 11) #8016
The Prophet's Mercy for Those Who Recite Islamic Declaration of Faith

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to attack the enemy at dawn, and when he heard someone reciting the Islamic declaration of faith, he said that they had come out of Hell.

Anas b. Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah used to attack the enemy when it was dawn. He would listen to the Adhan; so if he heard an Adhan, he stopped, otherwise made an attack. Once on hearing a man say: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, the Messenger of Allah remarked: He is following al-Fitra (al-Islam). Then hearing him say: I testify that there is no god but Allah. there is no god but Allah, the Messenger of Allah said: You have come out of the Fire (of Hell). They looked at him and found that he was a goat herd.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the mercy and kindness that Prophet Muhammad showed towards those who recite the Islamic declaration of faith. In this hadith, Anas b. Malik reported that whenever the Prophet was about to attack an enemy at dawn, he would listen for a call to prayer or adhan. If he heard it, then he would stop his attack and if not then he would continue with it. On one occasion, while attacking an enemy at dawn, they heard a man reciting “Allah is the Greatest” followed by “I testify that there is no god but Allah” which are part of the shahada or Islamic declaration of faith. Upon hearing this recitation from afar, Prophet Muhammad remarked that this person was following their fitra or nature/instinct and has come out from Hellfire due to their belief in Allah as well as His oneness. When they looked closer they found out that it was a goat herder who was reciting these words in order to protect his herd from danger! This shows us how much mercy and kindness our beloved prophet showed towards those who believed in Allah even if they were not Muslims yet!
