Sahih Muslim 377 (Book 4, Hadith 1) #8006
Summoning the People to Prayer

SUMMARY: The Muslims in Medina were looking for a way to be notified of prayer times, and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) suggested Bilal to call them.

Ibn Umar reported: When the Muslims came to Medina, they gathered and sought to know the time of prayer but no one summoned them. One day they discussed the matter, and some of them said: Use something like the bell of the Christians and some of them said: Use horn like that of the Jews. Umar said: Why may not a be appointed who should call (people) to prayer? The Messenger of Allah said: O Bilal, get up and summon (the people) to prayer.

QUICK LESSONS:
Look for better solutions and think outside of what is traditionally done in order to find new ways of doing things; Respect towards religious duties; Pray on time
EXPLANATIONS:
When the Muslims moved to Medina they needed a way to know when it was time for prayer. Some people suggested using bells like the Christians or horns like the Jews but Umar had another idea. He suggested appointing someone who could call out when it was time for prayer. The Prophet Muhammad then chose Bilal as this person and he would call out when it was time for prayer so that everyone knew when it was time. This hadith teaches us that we should always look for better solutions and think outside of what is traditionally done in order to find new ways of doing things. It also shows us how important it is to pray on time and how much respect we should have towards our religious duties.
