Sahih Muslim 299 (Book 3, Hadith 13) #7861
Menstruation Should Not Be a Barrier

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught that menstruation should not be a barrier to fulfilling one's duties.

Abu Huraira reported: While the Messenger of Allah was in the mosque, he said: O 'A'isha, get me that garment. She said: I am menstruating. Upon this he remarked: Your menstruation is not in your hand, and she, therefore, got him that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Fulfill one's obligations despite any restrictions due to one's menstrual cycle.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on menstruation and duty. In this hadith, the Prophet was in the mosque when he asked his wife 'A'isha for a garment. She told him she was menstruating and he replied that her menstrual cycle should not stop her from fulfilling her duties. This teaches us that even though women may have certain restrictions due to their menstrual cycle, they should still fulfill their obligations as best as they can. It also shows us that men should be understanding of women during this time and not expect them to do more than what is reasonable for them to do while they are menstruating.
