Praying in Menstrual-Stained Clothing

SUMMARY: A woman asked the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) what to do if her clothing gets stained with menstrual blood, and he instructed her to scrape it off, rub it with water, pour water over it and then pray in it.

Asma (daughter of Abu Bakr) reported: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah and said: What should one do if the blood of menses smears the garment of one amongst us? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: She should scrape it, then rub it with water, then pour water over it and then offer prayer in it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a woman who came to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asking what she should do if her clothing got stained with menstrual blood. The Prophet ﷺ instructed her to scrape off the stain, rub it with water, pour more water over it and then offer prayer in that same garment. This hadith teaches us that cleanliness is important when praying but also that we should not be ashamed of our natural bodily functions such as menstruation. We can still pray even if our clothes get stained by these functions as long as we take steps to clean them properly first. It also shows us how compassionate and understanding the Prophet ﷺ was towards women's issues which were often overlooked or ignored at the time.
