Sahih Muslim 280b (Book 2, Hadith 120) #7824
Permission to Use Dogs

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad gave permission to use dogs for herding, hunting and watching cultivated lands.

A hadith like this has been narrated from Shu'ba with the same chain of transmitters except for the fact that in the hadith transmitted by Yahya those words are: " He (the Holy Prophet) gave concession in the case of the dog for looking after the herd, for hunting and for watching the cultivated land," and there is no mention of this addition (i. e. concession in case of watching the cultivated lands) except in the hadith transmitted by Yahya.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad giving permission to use dogs for herding, hunting and watching cultivated lands. This means that people are allowed to use dogs in these activities as long as they are not causing any harm or distress. The Prophet Muhammad was very compassionate towards animals, so this permission was given out of kindness and mercy towards them. He also wanted people to be able to benefit from the skills of their canine companions in order to make their lives easier. This hadith teaches us that we should be kind and merciful towards animals, while also taking advantage of their abilities when necessary.
