The Importance of Thorough Ablution

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of performing ablution thoroughly and not in a hurry.

'Abdullah b. 'Amr reported: We returned from Mecca to Medina with the Messenger of Allah , and when we came to some water on the way, some of the people were in a hurry at the time of the afternoon prayer and performed ablution hurriedly; and when we reached them, their heels were dry, no water had touched them. The Prophet said: Woe to (dry) heels, because of Hell-fire. Make your ablution thorough.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of performing ablution properly and thoroughly. It was narrated by Abdullah b. 'Amr that they were travelling with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ from Mecca to Medina, when they stopped at some water on their way for afternoon prayer. Some people were in a hurry and performed their ablution hastily, without making sure that all parts of their body were washed properly. When the Prophet ﷺ saw this, he warned them against it saying “woe to dry heels” because it could lead to punishment in hellfire. He then advised them to make sure that they perform their ablutions properly and thoroughly every time so as not to be punished for negligence or carelessness in this regard. This hadith teaches us that we should take our religious obligations seriously and perform them with utmost care and attention so as not to miss out on any part or aspect of it which could lead us into trouble later on in life or hereafter.
