Sahih Muslim 142b (Book 1, Hadith 271) #7536
Responsibility of Rulers

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the responsibility of a ruler and how they should be honest and just in their rule, otherwise they will not enter paradise.

Hasan reported: Ubaidullah b. Ziyad went to see Ma'qil b. Yasir and he was ailing. He ('Ubaidullah) inquired (about his health) to which he (Ma'qil) replied: I am narrating to you a hadith which I avoided narrating to you (before). Verily the Messenger of Allah observed: Allah does not entrust to his bondsman the responsibility of managing the affairs of his subjects and he dies as a dishonest (ruler) but Paradise is forbidden by Allah for such a (ruler). He (Ibn Ziyad) said: Why did you not narrate it to me before this day? He replied: I (in fact) did not narrate it to you as it was not (fit) for me to narrate that to you.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of rulers being honest and just in their rule over people. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that if a ruler is dishonest or unjust, then Allah will not allow them to enter paradise. This means that it is important for rulers to be fair when making decisions, as well as treat people with respect and kindness so that they can earn Allah's pleasure. It also teaches us that we should not take advantage of our positions or power over others, but instead use it responsibly for the benefit of all people under our care. We must remember that we are accountable for our actions before Allah, so it is important to always strive for justice and fairness in all matters related to ruling over others.
