Sahih al-Bukhari 776 (Book 10, Hadith 171) #751
Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha During Prayers

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to recite Al-Fatiha followed by another Sura in the first two rak'at of the prayer and only Al-Fatiha in the last two rak'at of Zuhr, Asr and Fajr prayers.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abi Qatada: My father said, "The Prophet uses to recite Al-Fatiha followed by another Sura in the first two rak'at of the prayer and used to recite only Al-Fatiha in the last two rak'at of the Zuhr prayer. Sometimes a verse or so was audible and he used to prolong the first rak'a more than the second and used to do the same in the 'Asr and Fajr prayers".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to recite during his prayers. He would recite Surah al Fatiha followed by another sura in the first two rak’ats of his prayer. In the last two rak’ats he would only recite al Fatiha. He also used to prolong the first rak’a more than the second for all three prayers; Zuhr, Asr and Fajr. This hadith teaches us that we should follow what our beloved Prophet ﷺ did during his prayers as it is a way for us to gain closeness with Allah SWT. We should also take care when reciting our prayers so that we can understand what we are saying and make sure that it is done correctly according to Sunnah.
