Sahih Muslim 120a (Book 1, Hadith 225) #7490
Accountability of Deeds Before and After Embracing Islam

SUMMARY: People asked the Prophet if they would be held responsible for their deeds committed before embracing Islam, and he replied that those who do good deeds in Islam will not be held responsible for their misdeeds in ignorance, but those who commit evil will be held accountable for both.

It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud that some people said to the Messenger of Allah : Messenger of Allah, would we be held responsible for our deeds committed in the state of ignorance (before embracing Islam)? Upon his he (the Holy Prophet) remarked: He who amongst you performed good deeds in Islam, He would not be held responsible for them (misdeeds which he committed in ignorance) and he who committed evil (even after embracing Islam) would be held responsible or his misdeeds that he committed in the state of ignorance as well as in that of Islam.

QUICK LESSONS:
Do righteous deeds even after becoming a Muslim as your actions will still be monitored by Allah .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the accountability of our actions before and after embracing Islam. It is narrated on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud that some people asked the Messenger of Allah if they would be held responsible for their deeds committed in ignorance before accepting Islam, to which he replied that those who do good deeds in Islam will not be held accountable for any misdeeds done in ignorance, but those who commit evil even after accepting Islam will have to face consequences for both their misdeeds done before and after embracing it. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to do good even after becoming Muslims as our actions are being monitored by Allah and we shall have to answer Him one day. We should also remember that no matter how much wrong we may have done previously, if we turn towards righteousness now then Allah is Most Merciful and He may forgive us our sins from the past too.
