Sahih Muslim 110a (Book 1, Hadith 208) #7473
The Consequences of Taking an Oath in a Religion Other Than Islam

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that those who take an oath of a religion other than Islam are liars, and those who kill themselves with something will be tormented with that same thing on the Day of Resurrection. It also states that one is not obligated to offer votive offerings of something they do not possess.

Thabit b. Dahhak reported that he pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah under the Tree, and verily the Messenger of Allah observed: He who took an oath of a religion other than Islam, in the state of being a liar, would became so, as he professed. He who killed himself with a thing would be tormented on the Day of Resurrection with that very thing. One is not obliged to offer votive offering of a thing which is not in his possession.
