The Blessing of Gratitude

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of being grateful to Allah for all the blessings He bestows upon us, and not to be ungrateful by attributing it to something else.

It is reported on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that there was (once) a downpour during the life of the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him Upon this the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) observed: Some people entered the morning with gratitude and some with ingratitude (to Allah). Those who entered with gratitude said: This is the blessing of Allah, and those who entered with ingratitude said: Such and such asterism was right. It was upon this that the verse was revealed: I swear by the setting of the stars to the end and make your provision that you should disbelieve it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of being grateful for all that we have been blessed with. It is reported on the authority of Ibn 'Abbas that there was a downpour during the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Upon this, he observed that some people entered with gratitude while others entered with ingratitude. Those who were grateful said it was a blessing from Allah, while those who were ungrateful attributed it to something else. As a result, this verse was revealed in Quran “I swear by the setting of stars” which means that one should not attribute any blessing or provision from Allah to anything else but Him alone. This hadith teaches us an important lesson; no matter what happens in our lives, we should always remember to thank God for His blessings and never forget His grace upon us.
