Sahih Muslim 59c (Book 1, Hadith 119) #7384
Signs of Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: Hypocrisy is a sign of a person who fasts, prays and claims to be a Muslim, but does not act in accordance with Islamic teachings.

'Uqba b. Mukarram al-'Ami reported that he heard 'Ala' b. 'Abdur-Rahman narrating this hadith with this chain of transmitters and he said: Three are the signs of a hypocrite, even if he observed fast and prayed and asserted that he was a Muslim.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us that hypocrisy is an important sign to look out for when determining if someone is truly a Muslim or not. A hypocrite may appear to be religious by fasting and praying, but their actions do not reflect the values of Islam. It is important for Muslims to practice what they preach in order to remain true believers. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that three signs are indicative of hypocrisy - even if someone fasts and prays, they can still be considered hypocritical if their actions do not match up with Islamic teachings.
