Sahih Muslim 59a (Book 1, Hadith 117) #7382
Identifying Hypocrisy

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught that a hypocrite can be identified by three signs: lying, breaking promises, and betrayal.

It is reported on the authority of Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah (may peace and blessings be upon him) said: Three are the signs of a hypocrite: when he spoke he told a lie, when he made a promise he acted treacherously against it, when he was trusted he betrayed.

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) taught us how to identify a hypocrite. A hypocrite is someone who lies when they speak, breaks their promises, and betrays the trust of others. These are all qualities that we should avoid in ourselves if we want to live an honest life. We should strive to always tell the truth, keep our word when making a promise, and never betray those who trust us. This hadith teaches us that these qualities are not only wrong but also reveal someone's true character as a hypocrite.
