Sahih al-Bukhari 7560 (Book 97, Hadith 185) #7262
The Benefits of Reciting the Qur'an

SUMMARY: Believers who recite the Qur'an are like a citron, which is good in taste and smell. Impious people who recite the Qur'an are like Ar-Rihana, which smells good but is bitter in taste. Impious people who do not recite the Qur'an are like Colocynth, which is bitter in taste and has no smell.

Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet said, 'The example of a believer who recites the Qur'an is that of a citron (a citrus fruit) which is good in taste and good in smell. And the believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like a date which has a good taste but no smell. And the example of an impious person who recites the Qur'an is that of Ar-Rihana (an aromatic plant) which smells good but is bitter in taste. And the example of an impious person who does not recite the Qur'an is that of a Colocynth which is bitter in taste and has no smell".

QUICK LESSONS:
Believe in God’s word by reciting them regularly ; Appreciate God’s blessings through His word ; Have faith even when one is impious towards God’s word .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains how believers can benefit from reciting the Quran. It compares believers to a citron, which has both a pleasant taste and smell. It also compares impious people who recite the Quran to Ar-Rihana, an aromatic plant that smells nice but tastes bitter. Finally, it compares impious people who do not recite the Quran to Colocynth, a plant that tastes bitter and has no smell at all. This hadith teaches us that reciting the Quran brings many benefits for believers while neglecting it brings nothing but bitterness for impious people.
