Sahih al-Bukhari 7543 (Book 97, Hadith 168) #7245
Stoning of Adulterers According to the Torah

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ ordered the stoning of two adulterers according to the Torah, and it was carried out.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: A Jew and Jewess were brought to the Prophet on a charge of committing an illegal sexual intercourse. The Prophet asked the Jews, "What do you (usually) do with them?" They said, "We blacken their faces and disgrace them". He said, "Bring here the Torah and recite it, if you are truthful". They (fetched it and) came and asked a one-eyed man to recite. He went on reciting till he reached a portion on which he put his hand. The Prophet said, "Lift up your hand!" He lifted his hand up and behold, there appeared the verse of Ar-Rajm (stoning of the adulterers to death). Then he said, "O Muhammad! They should be stoned to death but we conceal this Divine Law among ourselves". Then the Prophet ordered that the two sinners be stoned to death and, and they were stoned to death, and I saw the man protecting the woman from the stones.

QUICK LESSONS:
Abide by divine laws even if you do not agree with them or find them difficult in practice
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a situation in which a Jew and Jewess were brought before the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ on charges of committing an illegal sexual intercourse. The Jews told him that they usually blacken their faces and disgrace them as punishment for such an act. The Prophet ﷺ then asked them to bring forth their holy book, the Torah, so that he could verify if this was indeed true. A one-eyed man recited from it until he reached a verse which stated that adulterers should be stoned to death. The Jews admitted that they had concealed this divine law among themselves but did not carry it out in practice. Therefore, the Prophet ﷺ ordered for both sinners to be stoned to death and this was done accordingly with one man protecting the woman from being hit by stones during her execution. This hadith teaches us about justice and how we must always abide by divine laws even if we do not agree with them or find them difficult to carry out in practice.
