Sahih al-Bukhari 744 (Book 10, Hadith 138) #718
Praying for Forgiveness in Silence

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to keep a short pause of silence between the Takbir and recitation of Qur'an, during which he would say a prayer asking Allah to forgive his sins.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger used to keep silent between the Takbir and the recitation of Qur'an and that interval of silence used to be a short one. I said to the Prophet "May my parents be sacrificed for you! What do you say in the pause between Takbir and recitation?" The Prophet said, "I say, 'Allahumma, baa'id baini wa baina khatayaya kama baa'adta baina l-mashriqi wa l-maghrib. Allahumma, naqqini min khatayaya kama yunaqqa th-thawbu l-abyadu mina d-danas. Allahumma, ighsil khatayaya bi l-maa'i wa th-thalji walbarad (O Allah! Set me apart from my sins (faults) as the East and West are set apart from each other and clean me from sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt (after thorough washing). O Allah! Wash off my sins with water, snow and hail)"

QUICK LESSONS:
Take advantage of moments when you are alone or silent; Ask God sincerely for His mercy; Remember that no matter how many times you make mistakes He will always be willing to forgive you if you repent sincerely .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of praying for forgiveness from Allah in moments of silence. It was narrated by Abu Huraira that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to keep a short pause between the Takbir and recitation of Qur’an, during which he would say a prayer asking Allah to forgive his sins. He said “O Allah! Set me apart from my sins as the East and West are set apart from each other and clean me from sins as a white garment is cleaned of dirt after thorough washing. O Allah! Wash off my sins with water, snow and hail”. This hadith teaches us that we should take advantage of moments when we are alone or silent, such as before or after prayers, to ask for forgiveness from God so that our hearts can be cleansed from any wrongdoings we may have committed knowingly or unknowingly. We should also remember that no matter how many times we make mistakes, God will always be willing to forgive us if we sincerely repent and ask Him for His mercy.
