Sahih al-Bukhari 7466 (Book 97, Hadith 92) #7169
The Similitude of Believers and Disbelievers

SUMMARY: The hadith compares a believer to a fresh green plant that moves with the wind and stands straight when the wind stops, while comparing a disbeliever to a pine tree that remains hard and straight until Allah cuts it down.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "The example of a believer is that of a fresh green plant the leaves of which move in whatever direction the wind forces them to move and when the wind becomes still, it stand straight. Such is the similitude of the believer: He is disturbed by calamities (but is like the fresh plant he regains his normal state soon). And the example of a disbeliever is that of a pine tree (which remains) hard and straight till Allah cuts it down when He will". .

QUICK LESSONS:
Be flexible in your faith yet remain firm in your beliefs even under pressure or difficult circumstances.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the comparison between believers and disbelievers. It compares believers to a fresh green plant which moves in whatever direction the wind forces it to move but stands still when the wind stops. On the other hand, it compares disbelievers to a pine tree which remains hard and straight until Allah cuts it down. This hadith teaches us that believers are flexible in their faith; they can adjust according to different situations but remain firm in their beliefs when there is no pressure or disturbance from outside sources. On the other hand, disbelievers are rigid in their beliefs; they do not change even if faced with difficult circumstances or pressure from outside sources.
