Sahih al-Bukhari 7456 (Book 97, Hadith 82) #7159
Knowledge of the Spirit

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a conversation between the Prophet and some Jews, in which they asked him about the spirit. He replied that knowledge of the spirit is with Allah and humans have been given only a little knowledge.

Narrated 'Abdullah: While I was walking with Allah's Messenger in one of the fields of Medina and he was walking leaning on a stick, he passed a group of Jews. Some of them said to the others, "Ask him (the Prophet) about the spirit". Others said, "Do not ask him". But they asked him and he stood leaning on the stick and I was standing behind him and I thought that he was being divinely inspired. Then he said, "They ask you concerning the spirit say: The spirit, its knowledge is with My Lord. And of knowledge you (O men!) have been given only a little". .(17:85) On that some of the Jews said to the others, "Didn't we tell you not to ask?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Acknowledge our limitations when it comes to understanding things beyond our scope .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith talks about how humans are limited in their knowledge compared to that of Allah's. It was narrated by Abdullah while he was walking with Prophet Muhammad in one of the fields of Medina. A group of Jews asked him about the spirit, to which he replied that its knowledge is with Allah and humans have been given only a little bit. This teaches us to be humble and acknowledge our limitations when it comes to understanding things beyond our scope, as well as trusting in God's wisdom and power over all things. We should also remember not to ask questions we know nothing about or are not ready for answers for, as this could lead us into confusion or misunderstanding.
