Sahih al-Bukhari 7445 (Book 97, Hadith 71) #7148
The Consequences of False Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking a false oath to take the property of another Muslim is wrong and will be punished by Allah.

Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet said, "Whoever takes the property of a Muslim by taking a false oath, will meet Allah Who will be angry with him". Then the Prophet recited the Verse:-- 'Verily those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths, they shall have no portion in the Hereafter, neither will Allah speak to them, nor look at them'. (3:77)

QUICK LESSONS:
Do not take advantage of others through deceitful means.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Abdullah, warns against taking a false oath to take the property of another Muslim. The Prophet recited verse 3:77 from the Quran which states that those who purchase a small gain at the cost of Allah's Covenant and their oaths shall have no portion in the Hereafter, neither will Allah speak to them nor look at them. This means that if someone takes an oath falsely in order to gain something from another person, they will be punished severely by Allah in the afterlife. It is important for Muslims to remember this warning and not take advantage of others through deceitful means.
