Sahih al-Bukhari 7320 (Book 96, Hadith 50) #7025
Following in the Footsteps of Those Before Us

SUMMARY: This hadith is about following the ways of those who came before us, even if it means going to extreme lengths.

Narrated Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri: The Prophet said, "You will follow the ways of those nations who were before you, span by span and cubit by cubit (ie, inch by inch) so much so that even if they entered a hole of a mastigure (a small lizard) , you would follow them". We said, "O Allah's Messenger ! (Do you mean) the Jews and the Christians?" He said, "Whom else?"

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow the ways of those nations who were before you with dedication and commitment.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of following in the footsteps of those who have come before us. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was emphasizing that we should be willing to go to any length necessary in order to follow their example, even if it means entering a hole as small as a lizard's. He was referring specifically to Jews and Christians, but this message can be applied more broadly. We should strive to learn from our predecessors and take their wisdom into account when making decisions for ourselves.
