Sahih al-Bukhari 7236 (Book 94, Hadith 11) #6950
Seeking Tranquility and Strength in Adversity

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet ﷺ asking Allah for tranquility and strength in the face of adversity.

Narrated Al-Bara' bin 'Azib: The Prophet was carrying earth with us on the day of the battle of Al-Ahzab (confederates) and I saw that the dust was covering the whiteness of his 'Abdomen, and he (the Prophet ) was saying, "(O Allah) ! Without You, we would not have been guided, nor would we have given in charity, nor would we have prayed. So (O Allah!) please send tranquility (Sakina) upon us as they, (the chiefs of the enemy tribes) have rebelled against us. And if they intend affliction (ie want to frighten us and fight against us) then we would not (flee but withstand them). And the Prophet used to raise his voice with it.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of seeking guidance from Allah, giving charity, and praying even when faced with adversity. The Prophet Muhammad was carrying earth on the day of battle against a confederacy of enemy tribes, yet he still asked Allah for tranquility and strength. He also expressed his faith that if they intended to afflict them then they would not flee but withstand them. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn to Allah in times of difficulty, give charity as much as possible, pray regularly, and have faith that whatever happens is part of His plan. We should also remember that no matter how difficult our situation may be we can always find peace through prayer and trust in God's will.
