Sahih al-Bukhari 7195 (Book 93, Hadith 56) #6911
Learning from Others & Interpreting for Rulers

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ ordered Zaid bin Thabit to learn the writing of the Jews and to read their letters. 'Umar asked a woman about her companion who had committed illegal sexual intercourse with her. Abdur-Rahman bin Hatib was an interpreter between Ibn 'Abbas and the people, and some people said that a ruler should have two interpreters.

Kharija bin Zaid bin Thabit said that Zaid bin Thabit said, "The Prophet ordered me to learn the writing of the Jews. I even wrote letters for the Prophet (to the Jews) and also read their letters when they wrote to him". And 'Umar said in the presence of 'Ali, 'Abdur-Rahman, and 'Uthman, "What is this woman saying?" (the woman was non-Arab) 'Abdur-Rahman bin Hatib said: "She is informing you about her companion who has committed illegal sexual intercourse with her". Abu Jamra said, "I was an interpreter between Ibn 'Abbas and the people". Some people said, "A ruler should have two interpreters".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about learning from others and interpreting for rulers. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ordered Zaid bin Thabit to learn the writing of the Jews so he could read their letters when they wrote to him. This shows us that it is important to learn from other cultures in order to understand them better. Additionally, Abdur-Rahman bin Hatib was an interpreter between Ibn Abbas and other people which shows us that it is important for rulers or leaders to have interpreters in order to communicate effectively with those who do not speak their language or understand their culture. Lastly, some people suggested that a ruler should have two interpreters which further emphasizes how important communication is when dealing with different cultures or languages.
