Sahih al-Bukhari 7111 (Book 92, Hadith 58) #6830
Breaking Oaths and Betrayal

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ warned that those who break their oath of allegiance will be punished on the Day of Resurrection.

Narrated Nafi': When the people of Medina dethroned Yazid bin Muawiya, Ibn 'Umar gathered his special friends and children and said, "I heard the Prophet saying, 'A flag will be fixed for every betrayer on the Day of Resurrection,' and we have given the oath of allegiance to this person (Yazid) in accordance with the conditions enjoined by Allah and His Apostle and I do not know of anything more faithless than fighting a person who has been given the oath of allegiance in accordance with the conditions enjoined by Allah and His Apostle , and if ever I learn that any person among you has agreed to dethrone Yazid, by giving the oath of allegiance (to somebody else) then there will be separation between him and me".

QUICK LESSONS:
Keep your promises and never break your word no matter what circumstances you are facing.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of keeping one's oaths and not betraying them. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that those who break their oaths or betray them will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. Ibn 'Umar was so concerned about this warning that he gathered his special friends and children to remind them not to agree to dethrone Yazid by giving an oath of allegiance to someone else. He wanted to make sure they understood how serious it was to break an oath or betray it in any way. This hadith teaches us that we should always keep our promises and never break our word no matter what the circumstances are because Allah will hold us accountable for our actions in the hereafter.
