Reciting Medium Surahs During Prayer

SUMMARY: Mu'adh bin Jabal was criticized by the Prophet (ﷺ) for reciting a long surah during prayer and was instructed to recite two medium surahs instead.

Narrated 'Amr: Jabir bin 'Abdullah said, "Mu'adh bin Jabal used to pray with the Prophet and then go to lead his people in prayer Once he led the 'Isha' prayer and recited Surat "Al-Baqara". Somebody left the prayer and Mu'adh criticized him. The news reached the Prophet and he said to Mu'adh, 'You are putting the people to trial,' and repeated it thrice (or said something similar) and ordered him to recite two medium surahs of Mufassal". ('Amr said that he had forgotten the names of those Suras).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of reciting medium-length surahs during prayer. Mu'adh bin Jabal was leading his people in prayer and he chose to recite a long surah. Someone left the prayer and Mu'adh criticized him for it. The Prophet (ﷺ) heard about this incident and reprimanded Mu'adh for putting people to trial by making them listen to a lengthy recitation of the Quran. He then instructed him to recite two medium-length surahs instead. This hadith teaches us that we should not make our prayers too long or difficult for others who are praying with us, as it can be distracting or tiring for them. We should also strive to keep our prayers short but meaningful so that everyone can benefit from it spiritually without feeling overwhelmed or bored by its length.
