Reciting the Quran in Different Ways

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) teaching his companions how to recite the Quran in different ways.

'Umar bin Al-Khattab said: I heard Hisham bin Al-Hakim reciting Surat Al-Furqan during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger . I listened to his recitation and noticed that he recited it in several different ways which Allah's Messenger had not taught me. So I was about to jump over him during his Salat (prayer) but I waited till he finished his Salat (prayer) whereupon I put, either his upper garment or my upper garment around his neck and seized him by it and asked him, "Who has taught you this Surah?" He replied: "Allah's Messenger has taught it to me". I said (to him), "You have told a lie! By Allah, Allah's Messenger has taught me this Surah which I have heard you reciting". So I dragged him to the Allah's Messenger . I said: "O Allah's Messenger I have heard this man reciting Surat Al-Furqan in a way in which you have not taught me, and you did teach me Surah Al-Furqan". On that Allah's Messenger said, "O 'Umar, release him! Recite, O Hisham". So Hisham recited before him in the way as I heard him reciting. Allah's Messenger said, "It has been revealed like this". Then Allah's Messenger said, "Recite, O 'Umar" So recited it. The Prophet said, "It has been revealed like this". And then he added, "This Qur'an has been revealed to be recited in seven different ways, so recite it whichever way is easier for you".

QUICK LESSONS:
Listen carefully when being taught something, Verify information before taking any action against someone else

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad taught his companions to recite the Quran in seven different ways. It was narrated by 'Umar bin Al-Khattab and Hisham bin Al-Hakim. The Prophet saw that Hisham was reciting a verse of the Qur'an differently than he had taught him, so he asked him who taught him this way of reciting it. When Hisham said it was the Prophet himself, 'Umar took him to verify this with the Prophet himself. The Prophet then confirmed that it was indeed revealed like this and added that there are seven different ways of reciting it so people can choose whichever way is easier for them. This hadith teaches us that we should be open minded when learning or teaching something as there may be more than one way to do something correctly and efficiently. It also teaches us respect for our teachers as we should not doubt their teachings without verifying first with them before jumping into conclusions or taking any action against them.
