Sahih al-Bukhari 6890 (Book 87, Hadith 28) #6622
Forgiveness in Times of Tragedy

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the battle of Uhud and how Hudhaifa's father was killed in the midst of it. Despite this, Hudhaifa still asked for Allah's forgiveness for his father's killer.

Narrated 'Aisha: "When it was the day of (the battle of) Uhud, the pagans were defeated. Then Satan shouted, "O Allah's worshipers! Beware of what is behind you!" So the front files attacked the back files of the army. Hudhaifa looked, and behold, there was his father, Al-Yaman (being attacked) ! He shouted (to his companions), "O Allah's worshipers, my father, my father!" But by Allah, they did not stop till they killed him (ie, Hudhaifa's father). Hudhaifa said, "May Allah forgive you". ('Urwa said, Hudhaifa continued asking Allah's Forgiveness for the killer of his father till he died.

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for Allah's forgiveness even when faced with tragedy
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the importance of forgiveness even in times of tragedy. It tells us a story from the battle of Uhud, where Hudhaifa’s father was killed by his own companions. Despite this, Hudhaifa still asked for Allah’s forgiveness on behalf of his father’s killer. This teaches us that we should always strive to forgive others and not let our emotions get the best of us when faced with difficult situations or tragedies. We should remember that Allah is forgiving and merciful, so we too should strive to be forgiving and merciful towards others no matter what they have done or what has happened to us.
