Sahih al-Bukhari 688 (Book 10, Hadith 82) #662
Following the Imam in Prayer

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that the Imam should be followed in prayer and when he bows, one should bow, when he raises his head one should raise their head and when he says 'Sami'a l-lahu liman hamidah', one should say 'Rabbana wa laka l-hamd'.

Narrated Aisha: the mother of the believers: Allah's Messenger during his illness prayed at his house while sitting whereas some people prayed behind him standing. The Prophet beckoned them to sit down. On completion of the prayer, he said, 'The Imam is to be followed: bow when he bows, raise up your heads (stand erect) when he raises his head and when he says, 'Sami'a l-lahu liman hamidah' (Allah heard those who sent praises to Him) say then 'Rabbana wa laka l-hamd' (O our Lord! All the praises are for You), and if he prays sitting then pray sitting".

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow what your imam does during prayer; if they bow you too should bow and if they raise their head you too should raise your head . When your imam says "Sami'a Lahu Liman Hamidah" respond with "Rabbana Wa La Ka Alhamd". If your imam is praying while sitting then you too should pray while sitting .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us about how to pray behind an Imam. We must follow what the Imam does during prayer; if they bow we must also bow, if they raise their heads we must also raise our heads. When the Imam says ‘Sami’a l-lahu liman hamidah’ which means ‘Allah heard those who sent praises to Him’ then we must respond with ‘Rabbana wa laka l-hamd’ which means ‘O our Lord! All praises are for You’. If the imam is praying while sitting then we too must pray while sitting. This hadith teaches us about following instructions and respecting authority figures such as an imam during prayer time.
