Sahih al-Bukhari 6857 (Book 86, Hadith 79) #6592
Avoiding Seven Great Destructive Sins

SUMMARY: This hadith is about avoiding seven great destructive sins, which are joining partners in worship with Allah, practicing sorcery, killing without a just cause, eating usury (Riba), eating the property of an orphan, fleeing from the battlefield at the time of fighting and accusing chaste women.

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "Avoid the seven great destructive sins". They (the people!) asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What are they?" He said, "To join partners in worship with Allah; to practice sorcery; to kill the life which Allah has forbidden except for a just cause (according to Islamic law); to eat up usury (Riba), to eat up the property of an orphan; to give one's back to the enemy and fleeing from the battle-field at the time of fighting and to accuse chaste women who never even think of anything touching chastity and are good believers".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith was narrated by Abu Huraira who reported that Prophet Muhammad said to avoid seven great destructive sins. These sins include joining partners in worship with Allah, practicing sorcery, killing without a just cause according to Islamic law, eating usury or Riba which is forbidden in Islam as it involves taking advantage of people's financial difficulties for personal gain; consuming the property of an orphan; fleeing from battle field during war; and accusing chaste women who are innocent believers. These acts are considered major sins as they involve disrespect towards God or His creations. Therefore Muslims should strive to abstain from these acts as much as possible so that they can be successful both in this world and hereafter.
