Sahih al-Bukhari 684 (Book 10, Hadith 78) #658
Following Orders and Not Clapping During Prayer

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of following the orders of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and not clapping during prayer.

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd As-Sa'idi: Allah's Messenger went to establish peace among Bani 'Amr bin 'Auf. In the meantime the time of prayer was due and the Mu'adh-dhin went to Abu Bakr and said, "Will you lead the prayer, so that I may pronounce the Iqama?" Abu Bakr replied in the affirmative and led the prayer. Allah's Messenger came while the people were still praying and he entered the rows of the praying people till he stood in the (first row). The people clapped their hands. Abu Bakr never glanced sideways in his prayer but when the people continued clapping, Abu Bakr looked and saw Allah's Messenger . Allah's Messenger beckoned him to stay at his place. Abu Bakr raised his hands and thanked Allah for that order of Allah's Messenger and then he retreated till he reached the first row. Allah's Messenger went forward and led the prayer. When Allah's Messenger finished the prayer, he said, "O Abu Bakr! What prevented you from staying when I ordered you to do so?" Abu Bakr replied, "How can Ibn Abi Quhafa (Abu Bakr) dare to lead the prayer in the presence of Allah's Messenger ?" Then Allah's Messenger said, "Why did you clap so much? If something happens to anyone during his prayer he should say Subhan Allah. If he says so he will be attended to, for clapping is for women".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of following orders from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and not clapping during prayer. In this hadith it is narrated that when Prophet Muhammad ﷺ went to establish peace among Bani 'Amr bin 'Auf , Abu Bakr was asked to lead the prayer but he refused as he did not want to do so in front of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. When people started clapping , Abu Bakr looked back and saw Prophet Muhammad ﷺ who then gestured him to stay at his place. After finishing his prayer ,Prophet Muhammed asked Abu Bakr why he did not stay when ordered so . To which Abu Bakr replied that how can Ibn Abi Quhafa dare to lead a prayer in front of him . Then prophet Muhammed said that if something happens during a person's prayer they should say Subhan Allah instead of clapping as it is only for women .This Hadith teaches us that we should always obey orders from our elders or those with authority over us without hesitation or doubt . We should also be mindful while praying and if something happens we should say Subhan Allah instead of making any noise like clapping which is only for women .
