Punishment for Theft

SUMMARY: Theft is not punishable if the stolen item is worth less than a shield.

Narrated 'Aisha: A thief's hand was not cut off for stealing something worth less than the price of a shield, whether a Turs or Hajafa (two kinds of shields), each of which was worth a (respectable) price.

This hadith explains that theft is not punishable if the stolen item is worth less than a shield. A shield was considered to be of a respectable price in those days and hence any theft of an item worth less than that would not be punished. This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our possessions and also to respect other people's belongings. It also shows us that justice should prevail and no one should be punished for something they did not do or something which does not deserve punishment.
