The Wala and Manumission

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the Wala, which is a form of compensation for freeing a slave, should be given to the one who manumits them.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: When Aisha intended to buy Barirah, she said to the Prophet, "Barira's masters stipulated that they will have the Wala". The Prophet said (to Aisha), "Buy her, as the Wala is for the one who manumits".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the concept of manumitting slaves and the importance of giving compensation to those who do so. In this hadith, Aisha was intending to buy Barirah from her masters and they stipulated that they would receive the Wala as part of their payment. The Prophet then taught that when someone manumits a slave, they should receive the Wala as compensation for doing so. This hadith teaches us about how important it is to give back to those who free slaves and how we should not take advantage of them in any way. It also shows us how much respect we should have for those who are willing to go out of their way in order to help others by freeing them from slavery.
