Sahih al-Bukhari 6757 (Book 85, Hadith 34) #6500
The Importance of Manumitting Slaves

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the importance of freeing slaves and how the Wala (right of ownership) should be given to the one who manumits them.

Narrated Ibn 'Umar: That Aisha, the mother of the Believers, intended to buy a slave girl in order to manumit her. The slave girl's master said, "We are ready to sell her to you on the condition that her Wala should be for us". Aisha mentioned that to Allah's Messenger who said, "This (condition) should not prevent you from buying her, for the Wala is for the one who manumits (the slave)".

QUICK LESSONS:
Freeing slaves and giving them their rights as human beings.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the importance of freeing slaves, which was a common practice in pre-Islamic Arabia. It was narrated by Ibn 'Umar, who said that Aisha, one of Prophet Muhammad's wives, wanted to buy a slave girl in order to free her. However, her master said that he would only sell her if he retained her Wala (right of ownership). Prophet Muhammad then clarified that this condition should not prevent Aisha from buying her as the right of ownership belongs to whoever frees them. This hadith teaches us that it is important for us to free slaves and give them their rights as human beings. It also shows us how Prophet Muhammad valued justice and fairness even when it came to something as simple as buying a slave girl.
