Sahih al-Bukhari 6722 (Book 84, Hadith 15) #6466
The Responsibility of Authority

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the responsibility of having authority and power, and how one should not seek it out but rather accept it if given.

Narrated 'Abdur-Rahman bin Samura: Allah's Messenger said, "(O 'Abdur-Rahman!) Do not seek to be a ruler, for, if you are given the authority of ruling without your asking for it, then Allah will help you; but if you are given it by your asking, then you will be held responsible for it (ie Allah will not help you ) . And if you take an oath to do something and later on find another thing, better than that, then do what is better and make expiation for (the dissolution of) your oath".

QUICK LESSONS:
Take your responsibilities seriously when you are in a position of power or authority

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks to the responsibility that comes with having authority or power. It warns against seeking out such positions, as they come with a great deal of responsibility that must be taken seriously. If one is given such a position without asking for it, then Allah will help them in their duties; however, if they ask for it themselves then they will be held accountable for their actions. Additionally, if one takes an oath to do something and later finds something better than what was originally promised, then they should do what is better and make expiation for breaking their oath. This hadith teaches us to take our responsibilities seriously when we are in positions of power or authority and to always strive to do what is best even when we have made promises otherwise.
