The Discouragement of Making Vows

SUMMARY: Making vows is discouraged and it does not prevent anything from happening, but it can lead to the property of a miser being taken away.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Umar: The Prophet forbade the making of vows and said, "It (a vow) does not prevent anything (that has to take place), but the property of a miser is spent (taken out) with it".

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before making any promises or commitments you may not be able to keep in the future.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that making vows is discouraged by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. A vow is a promise made to Allah or another person, and it does not prevent anything from happening. However, if someone makes a vow and then breaks it, they may have to pay money as compensation for breaking their promise. This could be especially difficult for someone who is already very poor or stingy with their money - known as a miser - because they would have to give away some of their property in order to fulfill the vow. Therefore, this hadith serves as an important reminder that we should think carefully before making any promises or commitments that we may not be able to keep in the future.
